The successful run of the sixteen mile an hour steam locomotive the Rocket was the start of the transformative railroad age. Within twenty years of George Stephenson’s success trains were flying at over 50 miles per hour and over 6500 miles of tracks were laid down crisscrossing Britain (2 p. 163).
